Anybody in the forums using Solid-State Drive on their machines and would you prefer to transfer to this technology and leave behind the good old HDD?

It's not a new technology and has been around for quite sometime, I just want to know what you guys think of the new drive that's gonna be one-day soon to replace the HDD.

Here's a link to samsung's website where they demo their SSD:

Eventualy, yes it will replace standard mechanical hd's., but not yet.

1. Its expensive, very, very expensive.

2. Performance is not much better then normal sata, and on par or less then comparably larger (gb) 10k drives.

3. Life-span is still an issue.

I agree... its just now advisable to make the switch now... a few more months, then maybe the issues regarding price and life-span might be resolved. Until then, I'm going to cling to my trustee old hdd... :mayuri:

If its a reliable technology why not adopting it if its better that normal HDD. but i beleive its the price that will slow many down....

hmm, im too cheap to buy something that may be too expensive. just look here, im using a oct. 2007 ecs board with 3g pent.D 1.5 gb ram, and a 10gb ide hdd XD tight budget right now. plus i want to wait until that ssd gets perfected.

I believe that if you buy and HDD and only use it on your desktop, it doesn't really matter much ...since you won't be moving your desktop around too often... but if you use a laptop, then I think that would be the time to consider using SSD... :mayuri:

they need to make something faster that the usual hard drives. they are so slow. (i dont know much about SATA but i think its optical right?)

Yes. SATA is faster than the conventional HDD's. They're pretty easy to install ... you just plug one cable -- I think... :mayuri:

SATA is "conventinal" standard.

And its two cables.

SATA cable and either a Molex or SATA power cable.

ssd drives are rad, no spinning platters, less heat, less power used.
life span is a worry but how long do pcs last any way 3-4 years max if ur tight on the wallet.
I have owned lots of hdd and the best one i have found at the mo is a 500gb sata2 maxtor dimondmax21 it has a 32mb cache and goes like a rocket i get 5.9 on vista performance for the drive. ssd is gud but better for moblie technology due to the reasons mentioned at the top of my post.

for me I'll stay physical hard drives for now.... looking at my home desktop 1 TB internal (soon to be 2) and 4TB external soon to be 6 TB (and yeh I need it you try working with multiple 300MB+ photoshop files and capacity becomes a real issue). I couldn't even imagine the cost of taking even a small portion of that to SSD devices.

That said the SSD have proved them selves to be quite rugged in the field with our researchers new SSD equipped MacBook Air's surviving drops that would have potentially snuffed a hard drive.

Although the price is higher for SSD it eventually overshadows HDD in performance so i see no reason why anyone shouldnt get one.
