which anti-virus software do you think is the best? i use avg, but i forgot to d/l it and got a virus >.<

nikeair

AVG seems to work very well for me. My laptop came with free Norton Anti-Virus software but I took it off. Norton just seems to want to search for viruses whenever it wants to. It gets really annoying. I am not saying that it is bad or anything but I don't prefer it. AVG does a daily scan but you can turn that off if you want to. I prefer to tell it to scan when I want it to.

For free programs, AVG is the best.

For $ programs...they all suck couse massive resource hogs.

I have found that the best way to go is to download Grisoft's AVG Free Edition. Norton and McAfee have never done anything for me other than provide severe irritation.

However, for supplemental virus scans when you are suffering from paranoid delusions that your AV software is not truly protecting your system, you can use online based AV scanners such as PandaSoft's Active Scan, Trend Micros' Housecall, or Bitdefender online virus scan.

These online scanners are easy to find, just go to your favorite search engine and type "free online antivirus" and follow the links to the above listed AV scans.

So far, everybody seems to like AVG. I didn't know that it was that popular. Well I guess they should...cause its the best.:D If you want free.

The free antivirus that I use now is Avira Anti-vir .... I used to use AVG back then... good software .... and as nightwish had said... the paid programs really suck your RAM... so if it is only for personal use ... use the free software... :mayuri:

I heard that some anti-virus software might have viruses. I have never proved it though. I know that McAfee and Norton and some of those seem to think that all your computer is meant for is to search for viruses. And as nightwish said, they are all massive resource hogs.

I tried Norton, it was too annoying so I switched to McAfee. It was even worse so then started using AVG and it proved to be the best. It's reliable and very 'polite' unlike Norton and McAfee.

We should start a poll on avg vs. the others and see how many people vote avg. Looks like it would be near 100%.:)

Yes!

I have finally switch from slow-old Norton to Avast!

I suggest everybody to do the same switch to Avast! Norton only picked up 1 trojan, well Avast! picked up 10 trojans and 1 adware!

Well i was using AVG unistalled if for AVAST uninstalled that also to install PC Tool Antivirus. But the latter wont get updated so I wil uninstall if and put back AVG who is better.... Norton AV is good but took lots of time to updates and also has to renew subsciption and has to pay for and its a RAM eater as n slow down sytem.... So better use a free one...

rofl, reading this thread over again makes me think about a friends lappy.
Her and i both do a good share of torrenting and what not but she uses Norton=poopstain :D
i tried to do a couple of things to fix her lappy when we both got a ridiculous virus(aka transferd over into the external, and unknowing i loaded it into my lappy ;-;) but the norton antivirus just said "hey i hate you, and i'm going to failboat the whole laptop" and so it did by not even lettin' us get to the task manager because of the ridiculous lag, leaving us to a hard boot *shudders*
on another note' i've no idea why her anti virus never found the virus before we searched her lappy for it(to repair)
i was able to save my lappy w/just the basic PC'cillin(came w/lappy package) and a good ctrl+f to find the newly planted virus <___< delete and those dumb htagamajiggies

I would never go for norton, they are screwups, plus they have the nerve to bill you for the updates which most of the times doesn't even find those viruses.

I would go for Mcaffee before until I tried AVG, superb detection and cleanup and I can go with Trend Micro as well.

ok, we officially ruled out norton. the only thing i like about their company is the old ghost.exe file. i dont even have to scan anything with avg. the second i accidentally download say, a backdoor trojan, avg automatically scans it and i send it to virus vault. like this: http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m88/jamesb21222_2006/virus.jpg

AVG and Panda Anti-Virus are the best out there. Panda is a major consumer resource but a excellent choice if u PC is powerful enough.

darksensory
03-28-2008, 06:32 AM
lool. I think i tried panda and it was horrible. totally killed my ram, and they have it all dumbed down so you cant do the things you want to.

I use to use AVG until I read blogs and test sites like the link above which rated it on the low end of detection. Now I swear by Avira AntiVir. It's free and it's great. I don't have to worry about clicking on any links that have viruses (which rarely happens) because it detects it automattically. It can do system scans in the background if you tell it to and it goes so fast. auto updates like a pro!

I swear by being your own antivirus. You can usually protect yourself if you really look into what your downloading. Occasionally it'll be that one torrent you cannot find, then you find one and its a virus. Avira does the trick though.

Don't you love how when you go to these freeware company sites it so hard to find the links to the free download. They hide them pretty well!

Yeah, totally Panda could consume all the resource from ur Computer. But, the Anti-Virus is a excellent choice if u PC that can handle it. I like to use it when a Virus it's not possible to delete or can't get a Quarantine Vault and rapidly install it and goes into safe mode on Windows and delete without a single problem. To delete unwanted and troublesome Virus is a excellent choice and the best out there (from my own experience) but for daily using is a not-not if u PC don't hold more that 2GB of ram memory.

03-28-2008, 08:36 PM
yeah I figured 1gb of ram should be able to handle it. It wasnt too bad On my PC (1gb) but on my mothers it was crazy (512lol). But I didnt like the interface anyways, I just liked it for my mother because it didnt have any advanced things that could be messed with.

I have been using AVG 7.5 for the last whole year. I find it more efficient when it comes to dealing with stubborn home made viruses and internet viruses, and its compatibility rate with other anti-viruses anti-spywares is great. my laptop also came with norton anti-virus but its compatibility rate is quite low.

I also use Trojan Remover 7.0 which deals with all possible trojans and worms, currently am downloading the latest AVG which is AVG 8.0.
I will continue using AVG since it runs pretty well with NOD32 which am also using.

For the moment I use Norton Internet Security 2008. I have tried almost every anti-virus software you can imagine and sometimes screwed up with them. Some tech-support guy installed this on my computer and now I've been doing fine, except that it disables itself from time to time. . .

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Eset's NOD32 antivirus program. I have had it ever since I got my computer (2005) and it has worked flawlessly all through the years. I have never had any viruses or trojans and I want to say that that is hard to say of an antivirus program these days. Granted it is a paid software but when you have a lifetime license then it's nothing to worry about :)

I strongly reccomend this program to anyone out there as it's very reliable and it hardly takes up any resources at all :)

I think kaspersky is best.
it can scan from startup and the hight protect
your computer from virus. but if you don't want
it you can use DR WEB it the antivirus that can
kill the newer virus if you download it the lastest
version every week.

last time, i used Avast!- ( and what's with the exclamation?)..
Then found out it doesn't work well, then switched to Keprsky - but then, found out it's uncool and some viruses came through though.

But now, I used AVG. IT's soo cool and very effective.

The best Anti-virus program I have used before is Windows Live OneCare. You can tune-up your PC, you have constant internet protection from all intrusions. I do mean all Intrusions, it downloads the latest Windows updates and also makes sure you have your PC backed up. Anti-virus is state of the art as well. I think this is in the top 10 anti-virus programs.

This forum helped me in deciding which anti-vir is the best...

I used to have avg but i happen to get tempted to have other popular anti-virs.

Now I installed kaspersky but omg it's making my pc SLOOOOW DOWN!!

I had Eset nod32 but it was complicated and abort most of .exe files, even the safe ones.

I had Avira but it can't detect those viruses and trojans that exist in my flash drive (which BTW I am very positive about).

Now, since a lot said AVG is the winner, I will reinstall avg again.

BitDefender automatically deleted my files and it took months to restore them.

Nod32 is blocking every time I installed it and Kaspersky is very good but it slows my PC down and I can't afford that. Avg made a lot of "mistakes" in my mom's computer and when I scanned it with an other antivir ti detected 100 viruses...

I currently use ZoneAlarm Full and I didn't had any problems until now.

Anti Virus software is mostly crap. Unless you grab attachments from random emails and for some reason decide to run them, the chance of getting a real virus is almost nil. Spyware on the other hand is extremely common. Just load up an internet browser that isn't Internet Explorer, watch what websites you go to, and run a spyware scan every now and then.

Always back up your data and format your Windows drive as often as possible, I do it about once a month. It takes under an hour to reinstall Windows and the performance difference between a fresh install and an old one is very noticeable.

I've used only 3 anti virus, Norton , AVG and Kaspersky.
I think kaspersky is the best, there's no virus that kasperky can't detect, and it is very easy to use.
AVG is okay but there's this particular virus "autorun"that the version of AVG i am using can't seem to remove ,but i tried it on a friends PC which had a Kaspersky and it totally removed it.
Norton is okay also but it slows down my computer.

Kenpachi TZ

Norton is a hog when it comes to resources. That and it's way too intrusive.

AVG is nice and everything but I realised that it being free (the free version) meant that it can't exactly detect everything. My dad's laptop is slow and infected (by a virus I have looked up and aware exists on it) and AVG did nothing. I had to remove this virus manually but I don't even wanna know how many other viruses there are to remove.

NOD32 is a solid anti-virus for me. It's caught all the little bugs from all devices I connected to my computer (friends and my family all have one virus or another). I've had this thing for 2 months I think and have been download crazy.

I've only gotten 3 viruses since and that was before I had NOD32 (I was using stupid Norton that came on the laptop... stupid 60-day trial... I got rid of it on the 10th day >.<)... this thing is just awesome.

If you're gonna use an anti-virus use NOD32.

*Performs a salesman smile and thumbs up next to a CD box for NOD32.*

Just my 2 cents,
Kenpachi TZ

well whoever suggests AVG or AVAST are simply novice with virus protection .. if you go to www.av-comparatives.org .. you will see that according to tests .. they failed badly.. AVG has only 75% detection rate and avast around teh border line of 77%... i used to use both .. and laot of nasties got through.. what i would suggest for a good FREE antivirus is avira (antivir) you can get it at www.antivir.com there is a paid version that includes an antispyware with it... anyhow as far as firewalls go .. i would suggest comodo ( it passed not most but all leak tests)- i did use zonealarm and trust it comodo blows it away... www.comodo.com (its free) .. as for spyware protection i use spywareterminator.com ... its froma company called crawler .. it has live protection.. and up2date defenition files .. also its free .. and beats teh hell outta adaware 2007 (that became bloatware) and the crappy spybot that doesnt even have live protection... so there u go i gave u.. what i use .. and strongly recommend. :)

I tell you all, the best antivirus nowadays is Kaspersky... but it make user uncomfortable with high protecting, sometimes to slow when surfing net. Kaspersky suitable for big business company/agency...:D

For personal use, freeware is more than enough.....:D

I used to use AVG but the license expired....so I needed a new one and I got Kasper, (it takes to much memory) So now I'm at Bid defender I think is the last anti virus...

I'm using a fairly decent virus protetion called Webroot. It's easy to use, and is actually really good. It's already stopped three viruses from decimating me, so as far as I'm concered, it's as good as I need. ^^

Trend Micro Internet Security Pro for me :P My aunt is the regional manager for Asia Pacific so I get free copies and its so much better than AVG by like a hundredfold. A combination of TMISP and HijackThis and modifications of my regedit make my computer like... a maximum security prison xD

NOD32 is also really good, but I don't like the restricted customization options.

AVG Home free edition is the best... Why is it the best because it is for free! :)

For free programs, AVG is the best.

For $ programs...they all suck couse massive resource hogs.

Not neccesarily are expensive programs bad- i use a "gauntlet strategy" ~avira, avg.9, zonealarm~ zonealarm is the best all rounder and worth the money if you are going for the latest versions of it.

AVG is by far the best free anti-virus software, I currently don't have any anti-virus software that I buy, AVG free edition is very helpful by itself. I don't trust Norton very much anymore...
