Why is it that Japanese shows up as little squares on my computer? Do i need to download something?

you need to install the correct laungage pack to be able to display any other laungage that does not use the standard ASCII set.

If you use Windows - you should be able to download and updated version at the Microsoft website.

Yes, you can download correct language from Microsoft online when you using ms word,power point or excel.

idk if it's just my computer, but when I use my Gmail account, I can read the characters. I have Japanese characters in my signature, and they show up just fine if I send them to someone else with Gmail. But if I send them to someone with Yahoo, it gets all messed up and shows up as squares, like you said. Maybe it works on Gmail because of Google Translate...? idk, that's where I got the characters. So from this, I think I can gather that it also may work on certain websites as well. You could try to go to Google Translate and see if you can see them there. Unless you have already downloaded the software, then never mind...:o:)
