Hey, I'm sure you've all heard about Apple's new release of the new "MacBook Air" and I was just wondering what are your thoughts on this new laptop.

Would you recommend this laptop to anyone on these forums?

Apparently this new design breakthrough is as thin as your index finger, yet it still has a 13.3-inch widescreen LED display, full-size keyboard, and large multi-touch trackpad, it also only weighs a devastating 3 pounds.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend the MacBook Air to anyone. There's no CD/DVD drive, only a single USB port, no optical devices, no Ethernet port and contains non-replaceable components.
There are hundreds of many other portable devices that can do the same job,and has more features plus they're at a fraction of the price.
But then again, I'm not an Apple fan.

I'm not really sure. I mean I've seen it and it looks really cool. But in a laptop you need to have whats going to come in good hand to you. I've heard that it contains non-replaceable conponents.

I don't have much info on it.

it's really great how steve jobs was able to come up with his new laptop, and i'm quite impressed as to how they did it. well, impressions do last but for me i'm sticking to windows and linux... does it run MS OS too?!... hehe :hollowichigo:
----------
...another thing, i was just wondering what'll happen if ever you accidentally leaned on your brand new macbook air??? or if it rained (since steve jobs demonstrated it by removing it from a pouch) you accidentally used it to cover your head... hehe... well, i hope it's durable too.... no offense guys! :)

I read an article about it that summed it up pretty well for me:

It's not well-equipped enough for a main computer, and too expensive to justify a second computer. Thus, it's for people with spare cash to burn.

Something like that, which I thought was quite accurate really. ;)

I recommend this laptop to anyone who is not a power user. It has pretty good specs but not enough for its price. There is no CD/DVD drive so you have to find another computer and install some software on it so you can use its own CD/DVD drive. If you are more into style than functionality then the MacBook Air is for you. :mayuri:

If you're looking for the same thing but that runs windows check out the Lenovo ThinkPad X300.

Seconded.
It's just too expensive and useless to be of any practical value. It almost seems to be more like a "Hey, guess what? I have a tiny notebook" sort of thing.

I agree.. although the MacBook Air outscores this one aesthetically, this Lenovo would prove to be more useful. Its a full featured laptop, for a price a lot less than the MacBook air... and is as easy enough to carry .... :mayuri:

I can get one for as low as....
$2,420!

That's really expensive, but still. It's a pretty terrific machine, I don't know where else to get them other than Here. (http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/na/LenovoPortal/en_US/special-offers.workflow:ShowPromo?LandingPage=/All/US/Landing_pages/ThinkPad_notebooks/2008/X300&ipromoID=nbhi00190&)

But that's paying full price, I get a discount for already having purchased a lenovo. :D

I kept hearing that everyone kept breaking their Razors(cell phone) because they were so thin...I think it's going to be the same case. When I get my laptop it's going to be a tablet. :)

ah.. first post here in a few months and it would HAVE to be in a tech thread...LOL more things change....

yeh I wouldn't buy the Air myself, in fact I just bought a new MacBook black myself (yeh coughed up "the black tax" but black is always the new black) because it suited my budget needs more than the MacBook Air or the mac Book Pro (or in fact any Windows box).
Basically it's for on the go, on the road tech support, nice biggish hard drive and a DVD burner and enough ports to jack in to what I need though FireWire 800 would have been nice but most FW800 enclosures generally at least have USB 2 ports or will switch down and run to FW400 specs with the right cable adaptor. Runs XP Pro and Kubuntu via BootCamp and Parallels real nice - even had it running Vista quite well but that was out of curiosity as we don't support Vista so I blew it away. The video adaptor is "meh to OK" but it's not running games... would have bought the MB Pro or a desktop for that.

However my sister did buy a Air and it suits her work needs pretty well - a lot of to and fro between meetings every day and lot of short haul domestic flights (5 hour or less, she's not phased about getting 3 hours or less out of the battery as she has "real" paper work to do as well on her flights). Also she has low application demand - e-mail, web, MS Office, plus XP Pro via Parallels for her works in house programs. Just needs something that will run her preferred OS and looks good (yeh yeh but that's just as an important thing in management meetings as having the right brand suit, sounds stupid but I guess it goes with the job)

Three of the researchers I support also have Air's for their "in the field" research work and don't like the tiny displays of the other sub portables we were using before. They use XP Pro and some pre loaded traffic statistic software and all they need is a GPS plugged in to the USB port so they are not inconvenienced by only having one USB port. They also have Bluetooth keyboards and the Wacom 6x8 BlueTooth tablet for data entry but being BlueTooth again they're not held back by the lack of multiple USB ports. All of them have Windows desktop machines in ther offices though. The air's don't get used as desktop replacements just field work. The lack of optical drive is nice for us it means they don't go and install their own bl*%dy software and mess the machines up or spend their time watching dvd's when their supposed to be collecting data.

So far we've had a few drops, including one from off a car roof so a good meter and a half drop but no serious damage yet (touch wood) just some ugly scratches and small dents in the cases and having the flash memory ones means so far no dead hard drives.

So it's a case of what you want it for - most people aren't going to pay near MacBook Pro prices for a machine that's actually tech speced lower than the standard MacBook, but if the non tech specs (size, weight appearance) are as, or more, important to some people then yeh that's who it's aimed at.

Well the MacBook Air is a good product that can put in a regular envelope.... Well it don't bring anything revolutionary in the Mac or PC World as its just its slimness that make it out of the box... Well the latter has no optical drive no firewire and ethernet port so what the use of buying some that lack such importants parts better buying a laptop that cost less and has more functions...and a bigger screen....

Its really cute but it aint a real laptop.
That thing is so small and looks so delicate i cant spend a cent to get that machine, it will break that very day.
But anyway its a great step and micro technology, the screen is also so superb. All i can say is that its another step through technological innovation, but they should market that product on the vast world market

Personally, I think you would be better off just getting a regular Mac Book. That thing is REALLY small, and could be useful to people who travel a lot, but being so small has it's disadvantages. For one thing, it wouldn't be the best thing for the more forgetful people in the world. It could easily get wedged into a folder and never be seen again! And, of course, it's sturdiness. Mac has NEVER been the leader in unbreakable laptops. I'm pretty sure that if you dropped that thing from about three feet off the ground, it would soon be in pieces all over your floor. Another thing that I didn't like was that in order to make it so thin, there is no CD-ROM drive! Not that there is much use for it, there are about NO games that you can run on Mac, but there is still the chance that you may need to burn a PowerPoint onto a CD-ROM or something. In order to do that, you must buy a separate drive! So, overall, if you travel a lot and need something lightweight and portable and you have a good memory and quite a bit of extra moo-lah, you should be fine with this book. BUT if you NOT nomadic, you are better off with a regular one. In fact, maybe even try a PC. I am a PC person, especially since I like gaming. WOW this post is kinda long...Well...I really like the song they put in the commercial, though. i have it as a ringtone! :D
