I was just wondering what brand of computer or what kind of computer you guys use to get on the forum.....
I use my (crappy but good) CoreDuo Gateway Laptop to get on the forum...
I hope no one here uses Dells... Dells are the crappiest computers in the world!

I use some sort of Gateway laptop. Not sure, because I got annoyed with the sticker on it. It's so slow on getting anything started up even though it's barely full of anything.

I use a custom-built computer without a brand, although my friend (who helped me make it) decided on calling the Xanathos or X4br3-xCalibur. (It has Xcalibur on the front.) (I don't really remember, lol.)

same here, what we have here is a Computer built from the Ground up... sort of... :p

I custom built mine, IS there any other way to buy a PC? lol, it was top of theange when I bought it in Feb, so it's still above average....I can play most games at the crazy resolution of 1920x1440x32 and stillhave everything to the max :D
But I'm thinking I need to upgrade my video card...the one I haveis a Geforce 7950 GT but it's only a series 7 so whereas it works awesomely, it isn't compatible with the newer (and as yet unreleased) Shader 3.0 and DirectX 10 APIs so I can't do any development with them : /

Don't feel sorry for me. My Dell runs pretty well, and I can do quite a bit with this machine. Overpricing is not related to a computer being bad or good.
Have you ever used a Dell PC? I have used more than one. My university had several. My friends have had Dimension 8500s and other models, if they had any problems, Dell was good at remedying it quickly.
I have a desktop PC and a laptop from Dell. Both are very reliable. Besides that, all Windows based PCs are prone to problems, whether they are Dell, custom built, Toshiba, Sony, etc. Anyone could probably share one horror story or another that stems from using Windows.
benhur99ph
07-09-2007, 05:38 AM
well that's true, no matter how good your pc setup is, if your os sucks, then you'll be in trouble, hahaha, I am using windows too by the way.....

True enough. I used to have a Macintosh Performa 6200CD. It worked well. But it was severely underpowered even for its age.
I bought it in 1994, its specs:
CPU: 66 MHz PowerPC
Memory: 32 MB (upgraded from 16 MB)
Hard Drive: 1 GB
Disc Drive: 4x CD ROM
Floppy disc.
It was a reliable machine until you tried to install certain applications; mainly games and certain utilities.
I wish I had kept it as a keepsake. Shoot, I've even used a computer with a dot matrix screen, and it required you to switch through multiple floppy discs to use one program.

For some reason mac has always been making underpowered computers for awhile, untill about 2001 so their kind of behind in the computer market.

The price has nothing to do with it unless your cheap, you cant expect to get something good for 500 dollars.
jasinjildo
07-10-2007, 02:10 AM
Actually.... You Can get a really good computer for 500 dollars.
(That's if you have it custom made with the right parts...Not Dell Parts!)
and plus you need Dell parts to put in Dell.....
Kuchiki Raijin
07-10-2007, 03:02 AM
Not exactly, I opened my Dell case to upgrade the memory. The graphics card is a genuine ATi Radeon X800 XT. I also managed to put in Kingtson Dual DDR2 1 GB RAM sticks. No one at Dell is going to tell you, that you have to use Dell parts to upgrade your PC. If that were the case, it would cease being your PC.
Dell may use OEM very often, but then again, so do other computer companies. All of them do that to save money on building the PC. Why do they use OEM? Simply put, so they can increase their profits.
The advantage of a user custom building their PC, is that you have the ultimate control of what you put into your system. You can go to different vendors and buy the components you desire. I chose not to go that route b/c frankly, at the time I was not that computer savvy. Now that I have some more experience, I feel comfortable in building my own PC.

07-10-2007, 03:06 AM
Oh yeah... my opinions are biased because I had a really bad experience with a dell computer... and so did many people I know...
and by the way... sony viaos can't be trusted either :D
My brother's laptop's hardrive crashed while doing research in Europe...

I understand, there are horror stories with all types of different brands of computers. As consumers, a few bad apples can't ruin the perception of the brand. Consider this, how many times have you heard that Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, Jaguar and other car companies suffer from electrical and mechanical problems (this may be reserved to the US market)?
The other example is Apple's iPod. The first few generations were marred by either hard drive or battery failures. But in time, Apple improved on their product and such failures don't occur as often.
The other example is Microsoft's Xbox 360. The three lights of red error is horrible. Microsoft has to face the music that the first few generations of their console have faulty parts, and they're trying to remedy the situation by extending the warranty coverage, and fixing the problems for free.
benhur99ph
07-10-2007, 03:29 AM
what we're trying to say here is that there really is no perfect pc. dell has a probelm, vaio has a problem, even acer, toshiba, fujitsu, and even the mac,
even custom built computers are troubled by errors at some point.
that's when the warranty kicks in!

P.s I have never had a problem with dell, but i have had problems with hp, compaq and acer"crappy cheap pc" thats why i bought a dell and still am happy till today.
I would never ever make a custom pc in my life, i really need reliability of a warranty.

Sorry guys, for computers like HP, Dell etc they all like CBU cars. It'll be excitment stuff when they got an upgrade from its company but if from another vendor that's old stories sometimes just would bring crashing for your PC or desktop
I'm here in my internet cafe still use; when we built it with our self that would be more satisfied
P4 2.4A (Presscott)
Gigabyte i848 P(G)
512Mb x 2 PC3200 Kingston(CL-2)
80Gb SATA II WD
256 R9800
450W Enlight
Plextor Premium(B) CDRw 52x
17' Samsung 700NF
Some peoples said it oldest, crappy but for me it's amazing. Which OC through 3GHz it could be 3.6GHz but I don't needed so far.
So basically what we want maybe not what we need, built PC/ Desktop more cheaper, faster and better I guess. And we could more familiar with our own like soul mate, when there's any troubles I'll bet we more know than the others
In my home I've built the up to date PC/ Laptop, that I couldn't tell here. Because for me it's a need but how for the others ? for example the budget I've used it's normal, but for peoples in the third countries it could feed them for more than a month
Sorry if I'm too far from topics
For recommended I've use hardware which the chips from Taiwan, Japan, Korea
If not from that place you better prepare your budget, for a knowledge even NASA use the chips from Taiwan for a long time periode :-)

No name Windows whitebox core duo (nothing special does the windows XP Pro thing nicely though) with 2Gb RAM, 160GB HD.
1x 1GHz 2GBRAM TiBook PowerBook (legacy system these days just used for network diagnostics)
1x 1.3 GHZ G4 AlBook PowerBook, my main laptop (to be replaced with a MacBook Pro 17" early next year).
1x Toshiba Tablet with XP Pro... errr honestly can't even remember what model or specs it is it gets used so rarely, mostly gets loaned out and occasionally used for D&D sessions - runs some character/NPC management software and the tablet's good for drawing mud maps to show players :D

processors nowadays are moving toward how much info you can move with one clock... the core 2 duo is a prime example of that.... the fact is that all computers I had so far before this one had processor cores that clocked faster than the both the core 2 duo's cores combined... yet the core 2 duo is better at moving info. I also get smashingly better framerates in unreal 2k4 on my lappy than on my "custom gaming desktop" which I built leik 3 years ago. (note: I killed off vista through vmware... it's a zen kinda thing, it's an xp virtual machine without the vista base, so it is and isn't a virtual machine at the same time.)

Damn thats quite a system you got there though im not too happy with that CPU, it just seems to be so underpowering compared to the rest. Still nice lappy though :)
Actualy its te 64-bit bus on the 8400M GS thats realy killing him. it cant even use its dedicated 1GB of memory since the tiny bus cant access it all.

Well, I just built a new media pc about a week ago, I use it to record scrubs, stargate, planet earth and a dozen other shows im to lazy to watch when on.
Simple and cheap:
Motherboard: Biostar 945P-A7A (8.0) (possibly my favorite on-a-budget MB.
CPU: E4500 OC'ed to ~3600mhz (330FSB, 11x)
Ram: 2x 1GB Wintec Amp DDR2-667 (cheap and stable, just the way I like my budget Double Data Rate DIMMs)
GPU: X800GTO (good quality, got it cheap and plays games fairly well for its age.)
Tuner: Hauppauge 150 MCE 1042
HD: [RAID 0 WD250GB=500GB]+WD500GB in RAID 1 on a Rosewill 4SATA RAID 0/1/0+1/5 card.
PSU: PCP&C Silencer 470W
Case: Centurion 5 (not window), also my favorite case for budget builds.
Optical: 2x random sata dvd/cd burner drives
---------------------
So far I have ~300GB's of Scrubs, UFC, Stargate, Planet Earth, Simpsons, Futurama, Dirty Jobs, Samurai Jack, and a few other shows. woot!
Any one know were I can pick up OEM or Retail 500GB drives, cheaply? (<$100) pm me.

The computer I am currently using is a Dell Dimension 2400. It is one of the company’s older models, but I am definitely not going to complain. As long as it functions properly and allows the privilege of signing online that is all I need for now. Well, until I can purchase another computer.

Right now I'm using my travel laptop ~
Bought it direct from Dell ~
It is a Dell XPS, Centrino Dual Core II with plenty of stuff in it...but I hate laptops.
So onto the better one I use!
A homemade (recently begun/completed project) desktop ~
Has an Intel Quad Core processor, NVidia 8800 GT, 4gig DDR2 ram, 500gig hdd, an external 650gig, and what all else is needed to run it all at optimum performance...with plenty of nice blue LED fans...unfortunately, its all running on Vista...only because eventually thats where all the gaming is going to move to and I just wanted to be prepared for it.
I've also got my other desktop that I constructed two years ago ~ it isn't as well-powered as my newest toy, but it was really nice for its time and it runs most everything thats out right now ~ and it runs with XP, so it isn't a terrible toy :)

guys here is news, people released new direct x10 for xp so all the games that require vista can be played on a xp, ofcourse you need to have a nice rig but still dont need vista anymore
Zheden
01-03-2008, 07:43 PM
Yeah but eventually I figure that there'll be more things I need that won't be XP compliant ~ so I figured why not just go with Vista? Besides ~ I still have my XP desktop and laptop for whatever I need, too. Unfortunately manufacturers are going to stop making things backwards compatible and move on to the next thing only or they'll have to make things Vista compliant along with whatever the next OS is...so its not a big loss...just frustrating at times with Vista :p

Directx 10 on XP doesn't work yet, it is still in develoment. There are 3 things that might happen with the curent directx 10 for XP crashes when activating dx 10 features, not happening nothing, it means that it's dx 9 and only that and working but with not more than 8 fps in games than on vista on same settings u get 40 fps. Thank god i have vista and i didn't used that stupid hack on xp ( i have it too just as a backup:p ) but a friend of mine tried it, and after trying Gears of War he tried to install Win XP again :D
My PC:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Cooler: Zalman CNPS-9700-NT
Motherboard: Gigabyte X38-DQ6
RAM: 4 GB DDR2 Geil 800 Mhz
GPU: 8800GT Gainward
HDD: 3X400 GB Western Digital
Tuner: Winfast TV 200 XP Expert
Optical: 2X LG DVD-WR and after next month an LG BD WR :D
PSU: Akasa Power Green 80 500 Watt
Case: Raidmax Sagitta with 3X13 db 120mm fans and one 10 db 80 mm fan
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium+ Widows XP Pro
Tried to make a multimedia PC tough, on the gaming part, with all that power that it has, some lower cpus get an advantage of about 8 frames in some games :( sucks that most of the software designers still don't optimize the software too good for multicore processors especially quad core ones :(. I'd say it's pretty good but it goes a lil too slow because of the HDD :( i tried 10k rpm and 15k rpm HDDs and there is almost no difference so i sticked to 7200 rpm, can't wait for the flash HDDs to be launched and with more than 64 gb that are beeing made now, the speed will rise substantially but the price will raise substantially too :p but with the performance and speed of 10X, or more, of an WD Raptor HDD, it will worth the extra money:)

Well...at the moment, I'm using a slightly (extremely) out-of-date pc..
I didn't keep a record of what's in it...I just remember that there's a Radeon X700 series of some type, and 1 gig of ram...
I'm about $300 off my new PC, which is going to be sw33t...

I'm a total MacAddict and use an iBook (1.42 gHz, 1 gig ram -- and that's about all I know). I am death to any Windows pc I touch -- it's like instant blue screen of death -- since I have used only Apple/Mac computers since the very first Mac Classic came out years and years ago, and those darn Windows machines know it. let me throw this out here after being off the forums forever.....
my system:
CoolerMaster Stacker 832 chassis (sexy, stlyin, but flimsy as hell)
XG Vortec 600w single Rail PSU (nice but old and not 80 Plus certified)
Intel Core 2 Duo e6550 2.33GHz CPU @ 3.5GHz 500x7 FSB (go with an Intel e8400 now, its way better than this.)
ASUS Maximus Formula (BIOS 907) all i can say is don't buy the board, go with gigabyte, this thing sucks balls......
4GB Transcend AxeRAM DDR2 1200 CAS 5-5-5-15 2T
HIS HD 3870 Radeon TurboX (if buying 2 cards, go with the 3870X2, if getting a single card, go with a Nvidia 8800GTS 512 i simply can't recomend this thing to all but the true AMD/ATi fanboys)
Creative Labs X-fi XtremeMusic (crappy sound, go with an Auzentech X-fi its better)
Dual 500GB Seagate 7200.11 drives in RAID 0 very fast and (1TB logical drive)
all running Vista Ultimate 32bit edition (want x64bit but im waiting for SP1 to be out) P.S. people please stop bashing vista if you don't even know how to use it and don't know what its strong points are....
this thing is better than XP in stability and security and excels in regular performance on higher end systems. the better the hardware, the faster it becomes (XP hits a max somewhere before it on similar hardware.)
and just so you know, you can disable all those command prompts simply by going into the account settings, the rest should be obvious....

I agree with nightwish. You can build very nice computers if you custom build them. I think the best place is to do this is newegg, as nightwish said. Most of the parts there are for serious gamers so they have good video cards. They also have lower quality for those who don't want to pay as much though. We have a computer that was built from parts off newegg and it is very nice for the price we paid.

my 2 xp machines are a home made
my vista is a gateway laptop
the linux box is an hp that i took xp off of

macs get viruses and break too. there are just fewer viruses out there because the virus makers of the world want to hit as many people as possible which means you go after the system with the most users which are pc users, if macs gain the most users again, then guess who will be getting more viruses then. did you know that the first virus was made for macs? and that when mac made the commercial about how macs dont get sick, that 5 new viruses came out for the mac that day because they made the virus making jack@$$es mad.
